Berryl Spangled Tanager |
East of the Andes, on the other side of South America's continental divide in the Amazon basin are two of our nature reserves: San Jorge de Cosanga, and San Jorge de Yanayacu. These reserves give you the opportunity to see a new ecoregion and a whole new set of bird species, distinct from those west of the Andes.
The reserves are adjacent to Antisana National Park, and very close to Cayambe Coca National Park, Napo Galeras National Park, and Great Sumaco National Park. Being in close proximity to these protected areas makes for very high quality bird habitat--which means great birdwatching! Birding and hiking in this largely undeveloped region allows for opportunities to see and examine a diverse array of plant and animal species. At the end of your trek you will be rewarded with amazing views of the Amazon foothills.
Tours to these areas also stop at the many productive birding sites clustered in the area, including the towns of Baeza, Las Caucheras, Ollín, Guacamayos, Tena, the area around Papallacata Pass and Cuyuja Bird Sanctuary.
Our reserves contain wild, virgin forest which is home to many exotic animal species such as ocelets, panthers, night monkeys, porcupines, armadillos, and spectacled bears--perhaps you will get a glimpse of one of them on your trip!
While we do not yet have any lodges on either of these reserves currently, we hope to construct a low-impact lodge at San Jorge de Cosanga soon. Stay tuned for updates!
