Mountain Biking Adventures at San Jorge Ecolodges |
Mountain biking
Ecuador offers the cyclist seemingly endless back roads and trails to explore. The Incas--who were legendary road builders--and their living descendants have been carving out scenic paths for centuries. The Andes create a playground of huge vertical descents and gut-wrenching climbs at altitudes where the snow line and the equator meet. Descents of 10,000 feet in a single day can be obtained in several areas of the country. The world-class descent directly down the slopes of Cotopaxi Volcano, the technical descent down Pichincha Volcano, and trips that take riders from the heights of the Andes to the Amazon Basin are all highly recommended.
Our guide has 20 years of experience in mountain biking, and knows these back roads well. Forget pavement--we will be riding on gravel or dirt roads the whole way. We can customize rides to accommodate beginning mountain bikers on up to more difficult routes for seasoned riders.

Traditional Horsebackriding at San Jorge Ecolodges |
Horseback Riding
Experience a slice of 17th century life! On our horseback riding tours, we will ride mustangs with traditional saddles up to the high barren plains of Pichincha Volcano. Following a historic road that has been in use since pre-Inca times, we will ride past local potato and cattle farms up to an altitude of 4,700 meters o.s.l (15,400 feet) and take in the phenomenal views
(Note: Horseback Riding is available for groups of six or more only.)
Naturalist Tours
Most of us know the rainforest has great biodiversity, but on a naturalist tour, this concept will spring to life! Our expert guides know the nature reserves well, and will point out the many surprises the forest has to offer. A single acre of rainforest can contain over 700 tree species, each attracting its own set of birds, insects, and other animals, creating an astounding array of microhabitats. Watch industrious leafcutter ants dismantle a philodendron leaf to take back to their “farms” back in their nest, or see a flycatcher snatch an insect out of midair. On our nature hikes, you will find something new around every corner.

Our guests says
San Jorge de Tandayapa is fabulous, San Jorge de Milpe is Magical, San Jorge de Quito is lovely.
Birdwatching in the Magic Birding Circuit was EXCELLENT, very thought, many good news of many good birds.
Wonderful guidance by George, the owner. Food was good, accomodations were delightful, very comfortable, in beautiful settings, with birds outside the windows
Can´t ask for more.
We could have used more free time in Quito and in Milpe, but I wouldn´t have missed a thing.
Maybe Connecticut Audubon could schedule more time or maybe we could come back for a longer stay.
