BIRD PHOTO TOURS
Roughly the size of Colorado state in the USA, Ecuador is the most bio-diverse country per square mile in the world. With more than 1700 bird species, 136 hummingbird species (world record), 320 mammal species, 410 reptile species, 460 amphibian species, 4032 orchid species, and over 4500 butterfly species, Ecuador offers by far the best photo safaris in South America and one of the best in the world.
Ecuador is divided into four unique ecological regions: The Pacific Slope, The Inter-Andean Region, The Amazon Slope & The Galapagos Archipielago. Each of these regions are also divided into a broad spectrum of contrasting climate zones.
The Pacific Slope (Western Slope): one of Ecuador's most important birding regions due to its high endemism. The Pacific Slope is crossed by our two critical endemic corridors, the Choco and the Tumbes. The best region in Ecuador for hummingbird photography.
The Inter-Andean Region (Andes): world-known for its imposing snow-capped volcanoes, unique andean forests, and for its extensive paramos, where among other localized bird species, the 3-meter wingspan Andean Condor soars the skies.
The Amazon Slope (Eastern Slope): another very important region in Ecuador, famous for its high species richness per square mile. Cosanga-Yanayacu, a small area on this slope, holds the world Cristmas Bird Count record with 519 bird species recorded in one day!
The Galapagos Archipielago (Islands): 45 endemic bird species, pelagic birds nesting sites, white sand coral beaches, and spectacular volcanic landscapes are just some of the features of this fabulous region.
